When Dane Tanner steps through a one-way portal into the forest world of Trond, he expects another hostile colony to clean up. What he finds instead is the start of an interstellar war. A colony where no one can be trusted—because anyone might already be replaced.

The Selk have been hiding on Trond for a decade. These ancient aliens don't invade. They duplicate—absorbing humans and creating perfect biological copies that walk, talk, and remember everything the originals did.

Somewhere in the fungal darkness, an entity wearing the face of a woman Tanner once loved is waiting for him. She finds Tanner's violence fascinating. Because the Selk aren't conquerors. They're refugees, fleeing something called the Convergence—a cosmic void that devours civilizations. Something that human technology is drawing closer to with every colonization of a new world.

Now Tanner faces an impossible choice: destroy the Selk nests and trigger a massacre of the colonists they've infiltrated? Or negotiate with monsters who've been replacing humanity for years?

Either way, a fight is coming. And Earth just announced war on a big part of the galaxy.
