During a government-funded salvage mission, Dorian and the crew of the Argos visit the dead colony of Elysium-3 to strip it for resources. Expecting to find only ruins and scrap metal, the Argos crew is surprised to make contact with a group of humans still living on the planet. While the once great city of Neo Nubela crumbles around them, these survivors spend most of their time plugged into a simulation.
Curious why so many people would choose to live in a simulation over reality, Dorian decides to enter the Desiderium System. Once he’s logged in, Dorian finds himself both amazed and perplexed by this new world. This only makes him all the more determined to learn as much as he can. Guided by Lucian, one of the system’s developers, Dorian experiences wonder-filled worlds better than anything he has ever known.
For Dorian, whose life has been defined by monotony and hardship, the system turns out to be the perfect escape. But the more time Dorian spends in the system, the more disconnected he feels from reality. He can’t help but wonder if this new world could be the answer he’s been looking for. After all, now that Dorian has found a perfect world, what reason is there to leave?
