Mahreen Sohail's Small Scale Sinners has won the 2026 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. The short story collection rose above 387 novels and collections with what judges called "sharp and striking prose," capturing the emotional side of being an independent woman in today’s fractured world.

This year's finalists were no small competition: Dominion by Addie E. Citchens, The White Hot by Quiara Alegría Hudes, The Sisters by Jonas Hassen Khemiri, and Heart the Lover by Lily King , joining a legacy that includes Philip Roth, Ann Patchett, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Yiyun Li.

The PEN/Faulkner is the most prestigious peer-juried fiction prize in America, honoring published works judged by fellow writers with a focus on literary craft and socially engaged storytelling.

Personally, Lily King's Writers and Lovers was a favorite Covid-era read. The behind-the-scenes aspiring-writer angst was completely relatable, and pleasantly trivial against the backdrop of the pandemic. A timeless reminder as an author to write what you know. Her nominated companion is going straight to my TBR alongside this year's winner. What are you adding to yours?
