2025 PEN/Faulkner Award Finalists & Winner
Chosen by writers for writers, this year’s PEN/Faulkner picks span humor, history, and heartache. Meet the five standout finalists—and the one novel that rose above.
Fiction is wildly subjective and while there are no bad books, we all love a vetted novel. The annual PEN/Faulkner Award honors the best published works of American fiction. Peer-driven, this accolade is simply: writers judging writers. This year’s panel included Guggenheim recipient, Bruce Holsinger; award-winning short story author, Deesha Philyaw; and Pulitzer Prize finalist, Luis Alberto Urrea.
“A first among equals” was awarded to one of five finalists, selected from a ten-title longlist. This year’s selections range from humorous to historic with hardship in between. Titles you’ve most likely browsed at your local bookseller, isn’t it time to crack a spine?
