Fiction is wildly subjective and while there are no bad books, we all love a vetted novel. The annual PEN/Faulkner Award honors the best published works of American fiction. Peer-driven, this accolade is simply: writers judging writers. This year’s panel included Guggenheim recipient, Bruce Holsinger; award-winning short story author, Deesha Philyaw; and Pulitzer Prize finalist, Luis Alberto Urrea.

“A first among equals” was awarded to one of five finalists, selected from a ten-title longlist. This year’s selections range from humorous to historic with hardship in between. Titles you’ve most likely browsed at your local bookseller, isn’t it time to crack a spine?
