William Peter Blatty (1928–2017) was an acclaimed American author, screenwriter, and filmmaker, best known for his seminal horror novel The Exorcist (1971). Born in New York City to Lebanese immigrant parents, Blatty grew up in modest circumstances, which he later credited for shaping his creative vision. He earned a degree in English from Georgetown University and a master's in English literature from George Washington University.

Blatty began his career writing comedic screenplays, including A Shot in the Dark (1964), before turning to darker themes. The Exorcist, inspired by a real-life exorcism case, became a cultural phenomenon, topping bestseller lists and earning him an Academy Award for his screenplay adaptation in 1973. The film's success cemented his legacy as a master of horror.

In addition to his horror work, Blatty authored several other novels, including The Ninth Configuration (1978) and Legion (1983), which further explored themes of faith, redemption, and the supernatural. He was a deeply religious man, and his work often reflected his philosophical and theological inquiries.

Blatty's contributions to literature and cinema remain influential, blending psychological depth with chilling narratives. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy that continues to captivate audiences.
