The island of Dusk has turned on the Arrowood and Everhart families. After a phoenix egg was destroyed in the name of their feud, its mother cursed the population with a magical illness that threatens to kill them all.

With no way off the island, Maeve, Ben, and the rest of Dusk face either starvation or dying at the hands of the supernatural affliction. But when the merfolk reveal the existence of a pirate ship trapped in a time bubble, Maeve and Ben must track it down in the vain hope that they can find a way off the island.
