Nyrnn Ashall has her friends back, and no way out. Trapped in an ancient city, bearing the weight of what she traded away, she searches for a way to undo it. When they finally find a way out, they scatter. Nyrnn and Gryff make for the Outer Cities, chasing a stolen ledger that may hold the truth about the Queen’s bargain with the gods. Tray sets out with Relle and Cal’in to find a true cure for the poison. Nord remains in Starfall, fighting to hold their home together—and hiding secrets that could get him killed.

But the Outer Cities are nothing like Nyrnn imagined. The farther she travels, the harder it is to tell allies from enemies—and one thing becomes clear: whatever drives the Queen, it isn’t hatred. The gods Nyrnn bargained with have been playing a far longer game than she ever realized.
