Having spent more than two decades devotedly writing fantasy, it’s safe to say M. H. Woodscourt is now more dragon than human. All of her fantasy worlds connect with each other in the broad Mithrinn Universe™, forged with great love and no small measure of blood, sweat, and tears. When she's not writing, she's napping or reading a book with a mug of hot cocoa close at hand while her quirky cat Wynter nibbles her nose.

10 Questions with M. H. Woodscourt
1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

I've spent years cultivating lyrical yet accessible prose in high fantasy worlds of elemental magic and unique dragons. I love weaving heroes, hope, and healing into my noblebright tales. Deep lore surrounds my characters, enriching the reading experience. All of my worlds connect within the Mirthrinn Universe.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up all over the place, moving over 20 times before I reached the age of 19. The variety of people and cultures, along with the rich tapestry of landscapes, impressed my young mind and stirred the imagination. I credit my experiences for shaping my worldview and story themes. These days I claim Central Idaho as my home.

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

Honestly, I was a slow reader, struggling to keep my attention on the page -- until I found fantasy. After that, I immersed myself in the genre. I firmly believe that everyone would be a reader if they only found the right books for them.

4

If you could write like any other author, who would it be and why?

I admire many authors' styles, but I prefer to write with my own voice rather than theirs.

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

I've gifted countless copies of Covenants by Lorna Freeman. I adore it and want the rest of the world to experience her delightful world and clever prose. Unfortunately, her series never concluded and the first book is now out of print. I hope you're well, Lorna, wherever you are. Thank you for inspiring my stories through your own!

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

Probably Mikoneh and Maya, the dragon twins from Dragons of Rokahn. Their history is, of course, more dramatic than mine, but many of their trials are vividly real because of similar struggles I've faced. Another character influenced by my life is Lekore from Record of the Sentinel Seer.

8

What is your favorite book that you've written?

Whichever one I'm working on at the moment. All my past work and growth as an author culminates into the Current Project, whichever it be, and I fixate until it feels polished.

9

Describe your writing space.

My writing room resembles an elven forest, with a running water fountain, fake ivy climbing the wall, live plants, bookshelves, and tapestries depicting ancient trees. My desk is surrounded by dragon figures and fantasy maps of my worlds, along with reference books, and Lord of the Rings paraphernalia.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

A elven glade, of course!
