George Orwell (1903–1950) was the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, essayist, and critic known for his sharp political insight. He is best remembered for Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, works that explore power, propaganda, and authoritarianism. Orwell also wrote influential essays on language and public life, drawing on experiences with poverty, colonialism, and war.
