As they conclude the investigation of the ancient islands rising from the depths of Busal's waters, Zaren Joha knows something is terribly wrong. As the Queen's Blade, he's sworn to protect the realm—but after confronting Hevala's betrayal and leaving her to drown, he discovers her death may have set something worse in motion.

Throughout Busal, mysterious illnesses spread and strange powers awaken in forgotten temples. As Zaren investigates, everything leads him back to Busal City, where he must confront the queen about how much she knew.

With his allies few and his loyalties tested, Zaren must make an impossible choice. The queen he serves may be compromised, and stopping her could mean committing the ultimate treason. But if he fails to act, the price will be paid in blood as forces older than the fae themselves reclaim what was once theirs.
