Sheltered behind the wards of a fortress built by a fallen Astralin, Roran trains under Walish to master a voidheart that has outgrown every teacher who shaped it. His sister moves in shadows he can't follow. Two cinderdrakes have bonded to him, carrying him over the ruins of the city he once called home. And the friends who first led him out of the basin — Thomas and Sophie — arrive among the refugees, blaming him for everything they lost.

When Walish shows him the burial mound of a fallen Astralin, Roran learns a truth no one was meant to know: even celestials can die. Something has been hunting them for decades. And it is hunting him now.

To stop a parasite that has already broken Astralin before, Roran must become the tree at the center of a forest of borrowed power — drawing on cinderdrakes, allies, and even those who hate him, then loosing it all in a single, devastating wave.
