Anne Perry (1938–2023), born Juliet Marion Hulme, was a British author best known for her historical detective fiction, including the long-running Thomas and Charlotte Pitt and William Monk series. Over her career she published dozens of novels, earning international acclaim for her richly detailed Victorian mysteries.

Her past came to light in 1994 with the release of Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures, which revealed that at age fifteen she had been convicted in New Zealand, along with her friend Pauline Parker, of murdering Parker’s mother. After serving five years in prison, she changed her name and built a new life as a writer in the United Kingdom. Despite the controversy surrounding her early life, Perry became one of the most widely read authors of historical crime fiction.
