Springtime Suspense: Must-Read Crime Novels for the Season
From cozy mysteries to chilling thrillers, these suspenseful springtime reads deserve a spot on your TBR this season.
Whether you need a cozy mystery or something a bit darker to bring some springtime suspense to your TBRs, I’ve got you covered.
These crime reads couldn’t be more different from each other, but all have that suspenseful edge to keep you reading late into the night. It’s what us crime-lovers crave, right?! From the genre’s greats, to crime debuts, there’s something for everyone here. Take your pick!
What better time than spring to pick out a stunning, suspenseful and unforgettable debut novel by a new author? After The Storm was one of my top reads of 2024 and I can’t quite describe how brilliant it is!
When Andrew and Sophie take their daughter and her friend to the beach on a stormy day, they are momentarily distracted, leading both children to get washed out to sea. Andrew dives in, but comes back ashore with only one child - his own daughter. It was just a tragic accident… wasn’t it?
An emotional, gripping and all-consuming read, and one of those books you’ll never, ever forget. One of my absolute favourites!
As you can probably tell by now, I do love a good mystery in spring, and Helle’s Hound definitely ticks that box. It’s a complex, witty and thoroughly entertaining story with brilliant characters and a baffling new murder to solve. If you ever want to really feel like you’re a part of a murder mystery, Oskar’s books are for you.
Dame Charlotte Lazerton is dead and while the police believe that she died of natural causes, our main character, Torben Helle, becomes convinced that Charlotte was murdered. One thing is for sure: Torben Helle is unqualified to catch a killer, and the killer knows it…It’s book two in a series, but can be read as a standalone.
Claire’s spring 2025 release, The New Neighbours, is certainly the most chilling of her books I’ve read so far.
When Lena overhears a conversation between her next-door neighbours, she thinks she must have misheard. It sounded like they were planning a crime. And the more Lena looks into the Morgans, the more she fears whatever they’re planning is linked to a secret from her own past. Someone is in danger, and it might just be her… Engrossing, tense and addictive as ever.
To ease you nicely into spring reading, how about a collection of short stories from the Queen of Crime herself?
Sinister Spring is a collection of spring-themed mysteries to get your teeth into, featuring some characters you may recognize if you’re a seasoned Christie fan. If you’ve never read this icon’s work before, this collection of stories will give you a taste of the author’s writing without committing to one of her longer novels.
If Claire’s darker novel is a bit too heavy for your spring TBR, how about a modern cozy mystery with a classic crime feel? The Boot Camp Murder is a lighter crime read, but it’s still crammed with little twists, an intriguing plot, and humour that is brilliantly balanced.
Monica, a career-driven, high-achieving young woman quits her job after her toxic, belittling boss becomes too much and instead joins forces with her brother to become pet sitters. They publicly clash with a much beloved personal trainer, who is then brutally murdered. It’s Monica’s job to find the killer and clear her name.
Gillian McAllister’s books are perfect for any season, right?! I’ve saved another of my favourite ever reads until last. This book has incredible character creation and development; a plot that made me sweat and panic just as much as the characters; a unique writing style that I don’t think can ever be topped in my eyes; and an overall gripping and captivating feel from start to finish.
During a family holiday in Italy, Cathy gets an urgent call from her sister; she’s hit a man with her car and now he’s dead. She asks for help, but when the police come calling, the lies start. What really happened that night? And who was lying to who? Suspense doesn’t get much better than this!
I always think ‘writing what you know’ is a brilliant approach for anyone writing a book, and Jeremy Vine’s radio and broadcasting background makes for such an engaging, original concept in this one!
Recently sacked from his job after suffering a tragedy, Edward Temmis is cast adrift. That is, until he meets Stevie, whose grandmother, a devoted listener to his radio show, died in a suspicious fire. And when more of his listeners are targeted, he decides to get to the bottom of this mystery himself.
It’s an entertaining and absorbing read with surprises, laughs and emotion in all the right places. But it also has that tension, the uncertainty and that dark feeling that I crave from a murder mystery. A fantastic first book in this series!
