Like many in the US, I grew up with a specific image of Christmas. Jolly Santa Claus. Elves making toys in the North Pole. Fresh baked cookies and letters filled with wishes and a stocking brimming with goodies in exchange for being good all year long.

As I got older, I learned more about the folklore and traditions that sprouted this sanitized version of the holiday. How some creatures might kidnap unruly children, that tinsel may have been inspired by spiderwebs, and that some festivities involve skulls.

Horror has always been there to explore the darker side of life; not to be scared, but to alleviate those fears. Christmas was once rooted in grittier, more terrifying traditions than the ones we have today. From twisted carols to Krampus himself, here are six horrifying novels that are a perfect way to spend a killer Christmas.
