William Golding (1911-1993) was a British novelist, teacher, and Nobel laureate best known for his classic debut, Lord of the Flies. Born in Cornwall in 1911, he studied at Oxford before serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, experiences that deeply shaped his views on human nature. A former schoolmaster, Golding’s fiction often explored the tension between civilization and savagery. His literary career included many acclaimed works, and he was awarded the Booker Prize for Rites of Passage in 1980. He lived in Wiltshire until his death in 1993.
