William Faulkner (1897-1962) was an American novelist and Nobel laureate whose work helped define Southern literature in the twentieth century. Best known for The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, and Absalom, Absalom!, he wrote with unmatched ambition about memory, family, race, violence, and the history of the American South. His fiction is known for its depth, difficulty, and lasting influence on modern literature. He grew up in Oxford, Mississippi.
