Five hundred years after magic was nearly lost, an old road is opening again.

Every year at midwinter, House Rohglinn delivers gifts to the villages under its care. Kadaris expects nothing more than cold roads, polite obligations, and a long day accompanying her family from one village to the next.

Then they reach the mountain village of Rook’s Bend.

A woman has vanished. A watchtower bell rings with no one at the rope. And the village’s harmless midwinter customs—lanterns for the lost, offerings at old stones, half-forgotten songs—begin to look a lot less like superstition.

When one of those old traditions goes wrong, Kadaris may be the only one willing to believe the customs once held real magic.

To set things right, she’ll have to piece together what generations have forgotten before the longest night is over.

Because one lost woman is still trying to find her way home—and something else may have found the road first.
