A desperate letter draws Fern Oakby to Witherby, where unnatural reeds are choking the river and the wind through their stalks sounds unnervingly like a warning. The adults hear whistling. The children hear music.

With Millie, Squib, and Eurydice at her side, Fern expects a troubling botanical puzzle. Instead, she finds a village holding its breath, a waterway gone silent of fish and birds, and a mystery rooted in old magic, grief, and danger.
