Publisher Description

It's just a few burning cities, your holiness….The survivors of the cataclysm are regrouping, led in the Medials by Mischief, the trickster goddess who caused the disaster, and in the Plains by Constantine, Lord of Logic. Conflict is coming, set ablaze by Constantine's fanatical desire to reinstate his rigid society, and Mischief's need to keep the chaos magic alive and flowing back to Mother's court.

Constantine is never one to wait, or compromise. His methods are brutal and direct, his troops and priests smashing their way through city after city. Mother, surprisingly, is disturbed by this; but it seems that too much violence taints the flow. Rarely one to interfere directly herself, she instructs Mischief to work it out with Constantine, a task similar to demanding that the ocean stop pounding the shore.

What's a trickster to do? Try begging? Unlikely to succeed. Perhaps a little trickstering? Possible. But whatever she decides, she needs to do it soon, before Constantine reduces the remnants of humanity to skeletons and ashes.

This book contains the second set of episodes from Mischief's Journey — The Empress, The Emperor, and The Hierophant. You can continue to Book 3, Evolution, or simply go to the complete volume, The Skin of the World: Mischief's Journey, if you want to get all the stories in one place.
