The Extraordinary Hearts of Cats

Everleigh Vaughan's life in the apartment above her mother's psychic market has been anything but ordinary. Since Eithne left veterinary medicine due to chronic mental illness, Ever's been overhearing her mother whisper to animals, tell fortunes from a cracked old glass ball, and pull tarot cards for the tourists.

However, the morning of Ever's twelfth birthday, everything changes when Icon Bay hockey captain and Ever's crush, Reed Broderick, brings in two injured cats that were left to suffocate in a tote bin - and Ever finds she is able to communicate with them telepathically.

Though the two cats heal well, Ever's mother says she has been traumatized by the event, which she claims was done by the reincarnation of Death and is a note from the supernatural world. Only a few days later, Eithne, her car, and the keys to the market are all gone without a trace - other than a message she left with Marvel and Lucky, the two cats she saved.

Combined with a budding paranormal connection to living beings and a strong interest in Reed, it doesn't take long for Ever to discover her mother's psychic abilities may be simply a product of her own mind.
