Margaret Mitchell (1900–1949) was an American novelist best known for her Pulitzer Prize–winning novel Gone with the Wind (1936), one of the most enduring works in American literature. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell was deeply influenced by Southern culture and history, which shaped the sweeping narrative of her only published novel. A former journalist for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine, she spent nearly a decade crafting Gone with the Wind, a Civil War epic centered on the indomitable Scarlett O’Hara. The book became a literary phenomenon and was later adapted into a landmark film. Despite her brief literary career, Mitchell’s impact on American storytelling remains profound.
