I like my readers to ask questions, probably because I’m an inquisitive overthinker, for better or worse.

10 Questions with Lisa King
1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

First off, hey everyone! Thanks for taking the time to get to know me a little better. When it comes to writing, I’m a big fan of blending genres. Generally speaking, my books are speculative and character driven, with some broader thought-provoking themes weaving throughout. I like my readers to ask questions, probably because I’m an inquisitive overthinker, for better or worse.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up in the 90s on a farm in rural Ontario, and while I’m not sure my upbringing influenced my writing per se, it definitely contributed to the development of my imagination. We didn’t have much to *do* by today’s standards (very limited screens, neighbours, and extracurriculars), so we had to get creative. Growing up in the country, I also developed a deep appreciation for nature and open spaces.

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

I remember loving picture books as a kid, specifically making up my own stories, and while I enjoyed some limited series (The Baby-Sitters Club comes to mind), I didn’t really fall in love with literature until University. And not in a pretentious, academic way; I just found some really gripping stuff. I pulled my first all-nighter reading Twilight.

4

For readers new to your work, what title would you recommend?

If you’re looking for something a bit different that features a heartwarming and unlikely friendship (with an apocalyptic backdrop) I would recommend VANISHING HOUR. If you’re seeking more of a psychological thriller that’s very atmospheric and twisty, you might really enjoy BLUE HAVEN. I also have some new titles in the works, so stay tuned!

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

John Green is my all-time favourite author. He’s a remarkable writer and also tries to make the world a better place. Gold stars for John Green!

Otherwise, I admire a long list of authors, but let’s go with Donna Tart (simply brilliant), Nathan Hill (also brilliant), Markus Zusak (love his unique style), and Lois Lowry (for writing the first book I ever loved: The Giver).

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

Other than my own, I don’t often gift the same book twice. Instead, I look for something unique and personal, whether that’s a coffee-table volume with stunning photography, a classic cookbook, or a murder mystery—all depends on the recipient. My favourite find so far has been Men and Cats (for a gal pal who loves men, and also cats).

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

That’s a tricky one! A lot of the characters I’ve penned share aspects of my personal story, but I think Aloe from BLUE HAVEN most embodies my fascination with psychology and tendency to overanalyze. It’s funny, because one reviewer found that to be one of Aloe’s more annoying tendencies. That’s exactly how it feels in my head: annoying!

8

What is your favorite indie bookstore?

I’m not sure I have a favorite; any shop that smells like coffee and old paper with a comfy seat is my Happy Place. That said, Ben McNally books in Toronto generously offered by buy some copies of VANISHING HOUR when it first debuted, and further allowed me to host an author event (which was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic). Also, they have the most beautiful bookshelves!

9

Describe your writing space.

This question made me chuckle. Last year, I would have told you about my stylized desk, bright window, and relaxing diffuser blend. Nowadays, I write on my phone with a tiny human furnace strapped to my chest, sweating, dancing awkwardly to an unsung tune while the little guy sleeps. Times have definitely changed.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

I imagine my ideal reading nook would be tucked away beneath an open window with a ledge for hot drinks, lots of pillows, a few cosy throws, and some memorable book quotes in cute, ornate frames. Oh, and a purring cat :).
