I grew up in Los Angeles & I think it might have influenced my writing only in that I ended up going into the film industry, which taught me everything I know about storytelling.

10 Questions with Kate Golden
1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

Hi! I'm Kate and I write fantasy stories with a strong focus on romance. I'm drawn to dialogue, banter, and slow burns, and characters who find themselves bettered by falling in love (even if they began the story hating one another.) I write in a simple, sometimes even colloquial style, which I hope makes the world building and fantasy plotting feel easy to digest and sink into.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up in Los Angeles (where I still live now) and I think it might have influenced my writing only in that I ended up going into the film industry, which taught me everything I know about storytelling. I've never written a book that takes place in Los Angeles though. Maybe one day!

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

Obsessive, romance-driven, fantasy nerd (some things never change.) Harry Potter, Magic Tree House series, Meg Cabbot, Daughter of the Moon (this one is a deep cut) and then of course, Twilight.

4

For readers new to your work, what title would you recommend?

I'd love to be able to craft a mystery the way Tana French does. She is the QUEEN of the craft, hands down.

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

I have given The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller to every single person in my life. I would give it to you, if I could!

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

Probably Arwen Valondale (the FMC of my Sacred Stones trilogy) because she suffers from panic attacks, as do I.

8

What is your favorite indie bookstore?

Book 2 of the Sacred Stones Trilogy (A Promise of Peridot) will always, ALWAYS have my heart. Their slow burn is everything to me.

9

Describe your writing space.

I have an oversized green loveseat facing the window in my office that gets the best light in the house. I curl up in the corner of it like a cat and don't leave for hours at a time. I work on my laptop to stay flexible and like to listen to soothing and epic movie scores.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

Maybe this is the LA girl in me, but I like to read by a body of water. Or, if practical, in a body of water. On the beach, by the pool, in the tub- these are my ideal scenarios. And yes, sometimes pages get wet and a little crinkled, but I think that's part of the magic.
