I love women’s fiction stories with magical realism, and this first book in Karen Hawkins’s Dove Pond series is a lovely example of it. The present-day story begins in May, when a reluctant Grace moves to Dove Pond with her adoptive mother and troubled niece, Hannah, in the wake of her sister’s death. 


Meanwhile, the town’s librarian, Sarah, has a magical ability to speak to books, and they’ve been telling her that Grace is just what Dove Pond needs. But can Sarah convince Grace that she has a special purpose there?
