Autumn has returned to the Ambarax Kingdom, bringing a new summons to Derry of Haverdell: he and Caedan have been invited to a celebration in the northern highlands by the lord of a noble house. Bringing Barrow and Jaslyn along, they travel to the holdings of House Ulforre, a sprawling estate among lakes, hills, moors, bogs, and a misty green countryside with wonders at every turn.

The celebrations are magical and powerful and pleasing; Derry and his friends find themselves surrounded by all manner of interesting people, poignant tales, subtle beauties, and wild nature. But within the halls and grounds of House Ulforre lie deeper secrets still—and some of them are restless. Strange sorcery, ghosts in the garden, haunting songs, disappearances, and attacks begin to dominate the ten days of their stay. And these restless secrets are only growing stronger.

Amid fire and light, days of revelation and nights of reflection, Derry, Barrow, and the others must solve the mysteries of House Ulforre, save their friends, and thwart the dangers they face. Before the end, all who attend the Dance of Fire and Light must recognize the responsibilities they have to one another: and reckon with deep-rooted questions of home, heart, and heritage.
