John Williams (1922–1994) was a Texas-born writer and educator known for his quietly profound contributions to American literature. After an unremarkable start in college and service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he began writing seriously and went on to earn both his BA and MA from the University of Denver. He joined the university’s faculty in 1954, where he taught creative writing for over three decades and served as a mentor to generations of aspiring authors. In addition to his teaching, Williams was an accomplished poet, novelist, and editor, with a deep interest in English Renaissance literature. His work continues to earn admiration for its clarity, depth, and enduring emotional resonance.
