J.D. Evans writes science fiction and fantasy romance. After earning her degree in linguistics, J.D. served a decade as an army officer. She once spent her hours putting together briefings for helicopter pilots and generals. Now she writes stories, tends to a tiny human, knits, sews badly, gardens, and cultivates Pinterest Fails. After a stint in Beirut, J.D. fell in love with the Levant, which inspired the setting for her series Mages of the Wheel.

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

I write fantasy romance that is usually a 50/50 split between epic fantasy and romance.

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up moving around a lot because my parents were in the military. I think living in so many places influenced my writing in that I love finding out about new places, cultures, and people.

What kind of reader were you as a child?

I didn't learn to read until relatively late (2nd grade). But once I did I was off and running, I read anything and everything, but I especially loved fantasy.

If you could write like any other author, who would it be and why?

N. K. Jemisin or R. F. Kuang. They have such a way of stripping away the fog around social issues and shining a light on them.

Juliette Marillier, R.F. Kuang, N.K. Jemisin, Robin McKinley, Kate Elliott

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

Probably Nesrin, the main character of Ice & Ivy.

Ice & Ivy.

Describe your writing space.

A brightly lit office that is perpetually in disarray.

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

One of those window seats that's big enough to snuggle up in, with bookshelves on either side, preferably looking out over a sea.
