I grew up in the north west of England and in Galway, Ireland. The fact I didn't feel quite fixed in one specific place definitely comes through in my writing. A lot of my characters are outsiders searching for their place in the world and hoping to find their tribe.

10 Questions with David Green
1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

That's a tricky one a one of my series - Hell In Haven - is first person POV, and my other one - Empire Of Ruin - is third person. One is urban fantasy noir, and the other is epic fantasy!

But, there are a few consistent things. My books are all character-driven. They all have detailed world-building. And they all feature neurodivergent characters (I'm autistic) and found families as a key theme. I like to pepper things with a bit of humour too, especially to puncture some of the darkness.

My urban fantasy Hell In Haven is rather like a meeting of Dresden Files and Supernatural, and my epic fantasy Empire Of Ruin is like Wheel of Time meets The Witcher.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up spending a lot of time in the north west of England, and at my family home in Galway, Ireland.

The fact I didn't feel quite fixed in one specific place definitely comes through in my writing. A lot of my characters are outsiders searching for their place in the world and hoping to find their tribe.

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

An avid one. I was reading Arthurian legend stuff at a very early age, and read The Hobbit for the first time when I was 7. Reading was always my escape, and it still is.

4

If you could write like any other author, who would it be and why?

I don't think I would like to. There are so many I admire - J.R.R. Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Joe Abercrombie to name but a few - and I'm for sure influenced by them.

But I have my own unique experiences that informs my writing, and I'm happy to forge my own voice and style. I'm not saying mine is better (and I always strive to improve) but I'd rather try to say something true to me than be like someone else.

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

Some of these spots change a lot, while others never do! Right now its:

J.R.R. Tolkien

Robin Hobb

Joe Abercrombie

Anna Smith Spark

Robert Jordan

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

It was, funnily enough, not anything Middle-earth or Wheel Of Time related, but The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss!

Nowadays, I try to gift people books from indie authors whenever I can.

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

Greton in my Empire Of Ruin books. He pops up in the first two books, but has a central role in books 3 and 4.

Like me, he's autistic, and he's very much an avatar of my experience. He's his own person too, and has many qualities I don't share, but a lot of his thought process is mine.

I wrote a cosy fantasy spin-off with him as the protagonist that is currently out on submission with my agent called Magic, Maps, and Mischief.

8

What is your favorite book that you've written?

My favourites haven't been published yet!

But out of the ones I have, it's probably At Eternity's Gates, the last book in my epic fantasy series. It has a huge scope, but is very intimate and character driven. I had to pull a lot off in the book, and people responded well to it (it was nominated for Best Fantasy Novel 2023 at the British Fantasy Awards)

9

Describe your writing space.

I have a little desk in the corner of my living room, with some maps hanging above the monitor - a map of Middle-earth, and one of Randland (from Wheel Of Time). I also have some original artist from an artist I love named Jenni Coutts.

Usually, there's a hand drawn map of the world I'm working in on my desk, as well as my dice set and a picture of my son.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

Rivendell ;)
