The idea behind Embassytown is one of my favorites: what if an alien species thought and communicated in a way that was utterly foreign and incomprehensible to humankind? Humans may share the same planet as the Ariekei, but the Ariekei’s concept of language is so different to ours as to require specially genetically modified humans to establish communication between the two. It’s a fascinating look at truth, veracity, intention, metaphor, simile, and language as we have used it since the beginning of time as a means of expressing every part of ourselves.
