Ben Galley is an award-winning British author of dark and epic fantasy who currently lurks in Vancouver, Canada. When he isn't conjuring up new stories or arguing the finer points of magic systems and dragon anatomy, Ben terrorises the Canadian wilds, swills Scotch single malts, and snowboards very, very badly. One day he hopes to haunt an epic treehouse in the mountains and dole out side quests to passersby.

1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

The short answer is high/epic/dark fantasy, but I've been known to dabble in YA, steampunk, and grimdark. The long answer is I love to create deep, high concept fantasy worlds, packed with magic and mythology wrapped up in intricate characters working through emotional storylines.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

Although I was born in England, I grew up in Scotland for 10 years, and it was during that time I discovered my love of reading and love of epic landscapes. That combined with the mythology and culture of Scotland (and the UK as a whole) really influenced me.

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

Voracious!

4

If you could write like any other author, who would it be and why?

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

For putting me on this path:

J.R.R. Tolkien, Joe Abercrombie, Philip Pullman, Robin Hobb, Brian Jacques

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

A History Of Drunkenness by Mark Forsyth.

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

That has to be Farden, the Written mage from the Emaneska Series.

8

What is your favorite book that you've written?

For depth of world, interwoven plot, and memorable characters, I would have to say Chasing Graves. Secondly, Heavy Lies The Crown.

9

Describe your writing space.

I have a nook surrounded by bookshelves, foliage, LED lights, and looking out over the bay and mountains of Vancouver.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

Window seat + rainy day + roaring fire + British pub
