10 Questions with Auralee Wallace
1

For those unfamiliar with your style & genre, how would you describe your writing?

Cozy, funny, and magical—with a twist of the unexpected. I write the kinds of stories that feel like a warm hug but aren’t afraid to pull back the curtain on the darker bits of life.

2

Where did you grow up and did this location influence your writing in any way?

I grew up in a small town north of Toronto, the kind of place where everybody knew everybody—and probably their dog too. That close-knit, cozy sense of community absolutely shows up in my writing, especially in the quirky small towns I like to create.

3

What kind of reader were you as a child?

Voracious. When I was small, I devoured Grimm’s fairy tales every night—especially the witch stories. I was also obsessed with the magical adventures in Enid Blyton and Jane Yolen’s books, before graduating to the dramatic world of Sweet Valley High. Basically, if there was magic, mystery, or melodrama—I was in.

4

For readers new to your work, what title would you recommend?

As a teenager, I would have said Stephen King. His honesty about the darker parts of the human mind fascinated me. These days, I just want to write like me—but different shades of me, if that makes sense.

5

Who are your top 5 favorite authors?

6

What is one book you repeatedly gift?

I tend to tread carefully with book gifting—reading is so personal. But if I really know someone well, I might send them a copy of The Night Circus or The Midnight Library—books that feel like a bit of magic wrapped in a story.

7

Of all the characters you've penned, who has been most influenced by your personal story?

Cassie from The Late-Night Witches, hands down. While the book leans into humor and magic, her journey is deeply shaped by my own experience with breast cancer. Cancer is definitely my vampire.

8

What is your favorite indie bookstore?

Can't do it! That’s like asking me to choose a favorite child!

9

Describe your writing space.

I’m incredibly lucky to have a little writer’s shed tucked under a towering elm tree in my backyard. It’s small, cozy, and filled with things that make me happy—books, blankets, and a mug that perpetually holds lukewarm tea.

10

And finally, what's your ideal reading nook?

I don’t really have an ideal reading nook, but most nights, I can be found reading in the tub - soaking until I'm completely pruney. Highly recommend!!
