Annie Proulx is an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist, recognized as one of the most acclaimed voices in contemporary literature. Her debut novel, Postcards, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, making her the first woman to receive the prize. She gained international fame with The Shipping News, which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and was later adapted into a feature film. Her short story Brokeback Mountain became the basis for the Academy Award–winning film of the same name, cementing her reputation as a master storyteller whose work captures both human complexity and the ruggedness of place.
