Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) was a Scottish novelist renowned for his thrillers and adventure stories, many of which became international bestsellers and successful films. His most famous works include The Guns of Navarone (1957) and Ice Station Zebra (1963), both adapted for the screen, as well as Where Eagles Dare (1968), which he wrote simultaneously as a novel and screenplay. Writing under his own name and occasionally the pseudonym Ian Stuart, MacLean sold more than 150 million books worldwide, making him one of the best-selling fiction authors of all time. Known for action-driven plots set against exotic backdrops, his stories often combined wartime heroics, espionage, and high-stakes drama.
