Jodi Wagner returns to the quiet cul-de-sac where she grew up to care for her aging mother. Her first night back, she sees a young woman walking alone down the middle of the street.

The next morning, the woman is missing.

And Jodi is the last person to see her alive.

An aspiring documentary filmmaker, Jodi’s project about the father who walked out on her has stalled, leaving her adrift. Soon she has a new subject: the missing woman. As she digs deeper, she learns of a second woman who vanished from Beverly Court years earlier. Neighbors insist that the reclusive man living next door is responsible. Jodi, reluctant to believe her neighbor might be a monster, turns her camera his way and uncovers damning evidence.

Meanwhile, an older woman recounts her life in 1970s Fresno at the same time a serial killer was terrorizing the city. A teen bride, newly married to a charming but volatile man, she describes how her husband grew increasingly controlling, how she was forced to flee via an underground feminist network for battered women. And how even after escaping, her husband stalked her across the country.

As past and present collide, Jodi’s true-crime documentary becomes more personal than she imagined, uncovering secrets women have kept for generations in order to survive. At its center is a terrifying truth: the worst horrors are the ones closest to home.
