A. S. Byatt (1936–2023) was a renowned novelist, short story writer, and critic whose work earned international acclaim. Educated at York and Newnham College, Cambridge, she taught English before turning to full-time writing. Her novels include Possession, which won the 1990 Booker Prize, The Children’s Book, and the Frederica Quartet. Her work has been translated into thirty-two languages and recognized with numerous honors, including the Erasmus Prize, the Pak Kyongni Prize, and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award. She was appointed CBE in 1990 and DBE in 1999.
